IRS Tax Payments: Estimates & Extensions

Quarterly estimated tax payments are due by April 15 (for Jan 1 – Mar 31 payment period), June 15 (for Apr 1 – May 31 payment period), September 15 (for Jun 1 – Aug 31 payment period) and January 15 (for Sep 1 – Dec 31 payment period)*.

  • If you need to make an estimated quarterly tax payment, please refer to the 1040-ES form that was given to you with your last tax return. This form will have the minimum amount you should pay each quarter to avoid a penalty, based on your prior year return, or current year information you provided to us.
  • Obtain your prior year tax return so that you can identify prior required while completing the next step.
  • You can make the payment via IRS direct pay IRS Direct Payment using your bank account information.**
    • Click “Make a Payment.”
    • Select your reason
    • Select your form type
    • Select your tax year

Payment of Quarterly Estimated Taxes: Make sure you select “Estimated Tax – 1040ES – 20xx” to apply payment to the correct tax year.

Payment with Extension of Time to File: Make sure you select “Extension – 1040 – 20xx” to apply payment to the correct tax year.

Please forward us the email confirmation of your IRS Direct Payment, so we can properly confirm that you have paid for your tax return.

* If the due date for making an estimated tax payment falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the payment will be on time if you make it on the next day that’s not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.

** Although not recommended, if you are mailing a payment, you can find the appropriate mailing address at the IRS site. Update 08/2025: The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that, beginning September 30, 2025, all federal payments to and from the government must be made electronically.
